My wife is moving to china, leavin our son&me .she is gonna give her parental rights to her mother. can she?

my wife plans to move out of the country abandoning everything but a suitcase. she is not trying to take our son. however, she says she is gonna give her parental rights to her mother, and that i will have to deal with my mother-n-law just like she was my wife. she says this will give her mother as much control as me regarding my son. Is that possible? can i sell her stuff? she says she not coming back. how long before she cannot claim half our estate?
