What does it mean to jailbreak your iPod/iPhone? What are the risks? How do I do it?

People use jailbreak to get free apps, music, etc. The only bad thing about it is it voids the warranty on the product so if it breaks you won't be able to get it fixed, and when I did it it made my phone slow.
