What is a GSM phone....?

And will it work for sprint..? I'm 12 so i don't have any clue of what GSM stands for i just saw a phone on eBay that said GSM unlocked phone..... And whats the difference between a normal cell phone and a GSM phone.....? How could i unlock or jailbreak or whatever..... my samsung seek if its possible
