Why is my jailbroken ipod not downloading everything free?

i have a 8GB ipod fourth generation. i used red snow to jailbreak it,and it downloaded Cydia but i had to go into Cydia to get to get Winterboard. i understand that you can get free apps from Cydia but i thought when you jailbreak your ipod you are supposed to be able to download everything free (like all free from the itune store and app store) what am i doing wrong?
